Once we finally got to the top of the mountain and found our cabin, we were delighted the host had set out 3 sets of binoculars - these views are breathtaking. Mid-May and the mountains are still snow-capped. Our cabin was 45 minutes up the mountain from the town of Cotopaxi. Each drive was a total journey, consisting of numerous stops to photograph nature and wild animals roaming their land, like this herd of elk. This deer was casually sitting IN the town of Salida, next to an elementary school. I bet he loves recess! Getting near the end of the road... It's been years since I held a camera or shot animals in the wild - these hummingbirds sure kept me busy. There were 5 hummingbird feeders on our deck, to give you an idea. I had to take our rental car for a drive by myself so I could stop any time I wanted to capture a shot. Moved by these mountains... Wake up. Make espresso. Admire the view. Give thanks. Repeat. Just a couple of hunters exploring the hills! This is a stellars jay... one of the most magnificent birds I have seen. There was a moment where a whole gaggle of them flew through the yard - at least 15 of them were flying tree-to-tree following each other. We highly recommend the Royal Gorge tours. These yurts are located right on the edge of Canon City - they also have some airstream trailers to rent out. Each night was a vastly different sunset... this was one of my favorites.
