Up-cycled Luxury: The Making of Northcast Leather Jewelry

Leather earrings and necklaces have been the staple jewelry pieces for Northcast since 2018. The origins may surprise you! Here is the unique story behind how I started creating these fun, wearable swatches.

When I was working at a local Cadillac dealership, I stumbled across last seasons leather swatches in the recycling bin and saw the perfect opportunity to up-cycle them instead.

The neutral colors are so easy to work with and allow me to make pieces as simple or as eclectic as I’d like.

Some of the leathers are standard smooth texture, and others are perforated which adds a unique texture to the jewelry.

Once I’m feeling inspired and have a color palette in mind, I’ll begin cutting the leather into my desired shapes. For necklaces, I use a yard stick and fabric pencil to mark the straight lines and cut them with a rotary cutter.

When I find a style that I like, I’ll make it in numerous color combinations - but I’ll only make a few so that they remain unique and as close to one-of-a-kind as possible.
